No. You do not need a referral to see a psychologist if you are attending as a private (self-funded) client.
If you would like to access Medicare rebates, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and referral from your GP before your first appointment.
Under the Better Access initiative, eligible clients can currently receive Medicare rebates of $149.05 per session for treatment provided by a Clinical Psychologist. A Mental Health Care Plan initially provides access to up to six rebated sessions. If your GP determines that additional treatment is clinically appropriate after a review, they may refer you for up to four additional rebated sessions, allowing a maximum of 10 Medicare-rebated psychology sessions per calendar year.

A Mental Health Care Plan is a plan prepared by your GP that allows eligible patients to access Medicare rebates for psychology sessions.
Your GP will assess whether a Mental Health Care Plan is appropriate for your situation and provide a referral to a psychologist. Medicare rebates are available for eligible sessions each calendar year, subject to current Medicare guidelines.

Your first appointment is an opportunity to get to know your psychologist and discuss what has brought you to therapy. Together, you'll talk about your current concerns, relevant background, and your goals for treatment.
Your psychologist will work with you to develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. There is no pressure to discuss everything in the first session, you can move at a pace that feels comfortable.
Your first session, and all subsequent sessions, are 50-minutes.
